Creating new encyclopaedic entries

Logging in

To create or edit a page in wiki, you will first in to log in. Click 'Log in' in the top right corner of the page.

Creating a new entry page

To create a new page, type in the title of the new page as you want it to appear in the search box and press enter. Choose 'Create this page' from the results page. The name of the page should contain the local spelling of the name of the practice, followed by the country where it originates, like so:

Adding an infobox and page categories

Infobox lists the main information about an informal practice. Page categories catalogue the entry and make it easily discoverable. Both require special formatting. To make it easier to add an infobox and format page categories, use the Infobox tool. Fill out all fields (if author's website is not available, leave this field blank), press the button and copy the output to the top of the page.

For 'Flagemoji', find the emoji with the flag of the country associated with the entry and paste it in the field. Leave the field blank if the entry represents a practice from a region and insert a globe if the practice occurs worldwide. For 'Definition', provide a single sentence summarising the entry or copy the description from the Glossary for the first two volumes of the Encyclopaedia. Please separate keywords with commas when you insert them into the 'Keywords' field. You may need to tweak the filename of the map image manually to show the correct map. Please check the uploaded media in the gallery to choose the appropriate image, or upload a new image of the map. Conceptual chapters, comparative essays or other pages normally do not require an infobox or categorisation.

To manually add the infobox and page categories, paste the code below to the top of the page, then fill in the lines with entry details and replace category names with relevant ones.

Inserting first paragraphs

To make possible a quick overview of the practice, the beginning paragraphs of the entry are emphasised. Paste the following lines of code beneath the last category line (leave one empty line) and replace 'PARAGRAPHS' with the first paragraph or the first two paragraphs of the entry.

Maps

For countries already covered in the encyclopaedia, the map will appear automatically with publishing a new entry. The infobox tool will format the filename for the map into "{Country} map.png", for instance "Germany map.png". If the map doesn't appear but entries from the same countries already exist in the encyclopaedia, check the map filename that appears in an existing entry and copy that map name. If the entry introduces a new country or group of countries, you will need to upload a new map. Wikipedia's PNG maps accompanying their country pages are usually the best choice. Upload them in the same manner as other images and name the image "{Country} map.png".

Formatting the rest of the text and referencing

Now paste the rest of the text. Separate paragraphs with empty lines. Use two single straight quotes for italic for all instances of any practice, like so: ''italic''. When cross-referencing, use double square brackets to link to another entry like so: [[another entry]]. Envelop titles in ==Title== for level 1, ===Title=== for level 2 and ====Title==== for level 3 headings. If you need further formatting options, see MediaWiki's help page.

Insert references following the example below.

The Sun is pretty big (Miller 1989<ref>E. Miller, ''The Sun'', (New York: Academic Press, 1989), 23-5.</ref>). The Moon, however, is not so big (Smith 2008<ref>R. Smith, "Size of the Moon", ''Scientific American'', 46 (April 2008): 44-6.</ref>).

Placing photographs or illustrations

First, upload the visual material (JPG or PNG) on a separate page, by using the Upload file page in the sidebar on the left. Use a memorable name for the uploaded file. Then, paste either line of the below code to where you would like the illustration to appear and replace the capitalized words with information about the material. Delete the last section if the picture should not include a caption. When illustrations appear in a group, they should either be of the same width or the same height.

When you wish to resize illustrations to the same width, as in this example, use the following:

Embedding videos

Videos hosted on large video-sharing websites can be embedded into the page by adjusting the following code example. Insert the URL of the video and the desired dimension. For further formatting options, see the extension's manual.

Creating redirect pages

Since it contains non-Western characters, Štela (Bosnia and Herzegovina) is difficult to search for. To ease the search and cross-referencing on other pages, create redirect pages with non-Western characters and country origins omitted from the title. A useful redirect for the above example would be a page called Stela. For some entries, more than one redirect page might be needed.

Create the redirect page in the same way you would create a normal new page. In the body of the page paste only the following.

#REDIRECT [[pagename]]

Instead of 'pagename', insert the original name of the page.

If you provided redirect names in the Infobox tool, you can click on each of the generated links, click 'Create this page' for each one and paste the redirect code displayed above the links into the page.

Updating the List of countries and regions page

If you added an entry from a country not yet in the list of countries, you will also need to create the country category page. Navigate to the List of countries and regions page, locate the country, click on it and create a new page. Add the sentence: "The following practices are associated with {country}" and save. Then, on the List of countries and regions page, enter the editing mode. Locate the country and make the font bold. The new country name should appear in blue and bold.
